Potato Ranch Update

The tater ranch is in a state of renewal. It's soon going to be out with phase 1 and in with the new spuds. So far we have 5 containers started for phase 2 and looking forward to starting more soon. Our harvest now stands at 76 potatoes. And each and every one was yummy. If anyone has ideas on starting potatoes fast, please let me know. We've got 10 potatoes sitting out on the counter just waiting for their eyes to sprout. Wish they would sprout faster..... Happy Gardening from Our Suburban Garden to Yours.

  2. That's pretty cool, what exactly do you need to do to grow them in containers ? Is it easy ? I like the tile idea for the strawberries, and it looks nice and artsy. --Wow, those packages were recieved quickly, I wish we could find out if J's made it there yet. We heard that several of the ladies sent packages before Charlie Co. left and they are still waiting- crazy eh ? That's really awesome you guys did that,I'm sure the troops are going to love it. :-) I sent his birthday package today early.- Good thing I did not plant the cantelope plants in the poly-pool, I had a sneaky feeling not to. The veggies- Cucumbers, squash, and green peppers so far- are totally happy and thriving in the pool. One of the watermelons have a yellow looking leaf though...I hope I did nothing wrong.:-( Leaves need to be green, not yellow.

  3. EG, Yes it is exciting. The containers are 5 gallon (but somewhat smaller than the paint/pickle containers). This is our first venture with container potatoes and we're getting 4 to 8 decent sized taters from each container. Have not started to weigh the veggies yet, maybe next year.

PMW, You put a sprouting potato in a few inches of soil and wait 3 weeks for it break through the surface with leaves. Add soil as the plant grows until the container is full. Glad your veggies are happy. Don't worry about a yellow leaf or two. Sometimes that happens and new green leaves will emerge. When I started tomatoes a couple years ago, I was very careful to only water a little bit so I didn't drown the plants. You'll have to adjust the watering to keep them smiling. Is J. up on email?

  4. Hello SG, with your white Gibson SG, I'm so glad you stopped by the Virtual GNO!

I love the look of your garden. My husband is on a quest to find lettuce starts. Can you believe we can't find ANY in our area? That's just crazy. Last night, the lettuce seeds went in the ground. (I have no idea of how long that will take.)

I saw you post about tile under strawberries. I'm going to try that out today. :->

  5. Thanks. The potatoes sound easy, am going to have to attempt it soon. Jason does grunt work, he's a gunner, & apparently what ever his guys were sentto do is so new that they were talked about on cnn . There is no email & pretty much only a company line to share. In a few months they will be in a better area hopefully. The phone is usually dead by the time he gets it. Can't wait to be finished with military in February !

  7. Ann, go ahead and plant the lettuce seeds. Ours come up in one week, and can be eaten in three or four weeks. Thanks for checking out our garden!! Let us know how you like the tile.

PMW, Potatoes are so fun. Will you go to the ball in November?

Barry, Hi and welcome to our blog. Thanks for the complement. We use lots of city water to irrigate the lawn.

HappyH, I like the photos of your garden too. Looks like it is coming along great, but I don't recommend eating just the dirt. Some veggies too!!! :)

    Happy Gardening!!
